For most of our civilization’s history we were stuck in a very bad place. Just centuries of subsistence farming with hardly any way out for hundreds of human generations.
That changed in the 20th century with machines and later with information technology, but have you noticed that it has been becoming harder to unlock each next generation of innovation?
A hundred years ago innovators racked up dozens or in some cases 100s of innovations in their lifetime. Building multiple businesses around them, and now… Institutions have to spend billions to get to the next iteration of improvement.
It’s the same in business philosophy too. Every sales technique, every marketing system, every niche has been coded over and over for you.
There’s not really much that can surprise you anymore, but business is built on discovering secrets.
Secrets, like a new demand, a new niche, a new way to do things.
Steve Jobs discovered the secret that he could put a computer in the pocket that also allowed people to talk. He built the iPhone.
Google’s founders discovered the secret that there was a demand from people to search the Internet.
When you find secrets of value, you can build a business around them.
The best paying secrets are those which are open. They are in front of everyone. You can see it, you can feel it but you can’t give words to it.
Sony built the Walkman, then they built the Walkman with a CD-Rom. They saw how mad people were about storing more music on the CDs. They saw Napster too, but they didn’t build the iPod.
Steve Jobs discovered that secret and he went to town with it.
If you can find a secret like that, something that touches a lot of lives, you can scale it massively.
But you don’t really need to do this, because these kinds of things are rare and you could spend a lifetime and not spot one.
Just as well, if you could go into a niche, a community, a market, a locality and find a hidden secret there. A demand, an underserved opportunity, a need someone missed; you can build your business around it.
So before you become anything else, you should be good at hunting secrets. Good observation, keen eyes and ears.
Look for people who are whining. Happy people make bad customers. If they are happy, they are content. They don’t need anything.
Whiners want something changed and they will pay for it. Look on forums, look in groups, look on Reddit, look on YouTube, on blogs. Everywhere you can.
Look for people who complain. What are they complaining about? Are a lot of people complaining about the same thing?
Can you build or offer them a service that helps them?
If you can… You’ve got yourself a business.
It’s going to be your secret.
